Businesses and mobile providers are gearing up to ensure that NFC technology is the big news of 2011, with tens of thousands of retail outlets likely to feature compatible hotspots before the year ends.

Near Field Communication (NFC) chips are gradually appearing in more mobile handsets, with Google getting the ball rolling with its Nexus S smartphone. Integrating NFC compatibility into Android 2.3 has also allowed other manufacturers like Samsung to get in on the act and the rumours about Apple`s plans for NFC in the next iPhone suggest that it could be a mainstream phenomenon sooner rather than later.
